Toyota Motor Kyushu Co., Ltd.(Located in Miyawaka City, Fukuoka, President: Iwao Nihashi) and TRIART,INC. (Located in Iizuka City, Fukuoka, CEO: Kentaro Imazu) have jointly developed a secure camera solution that allows the use of the iPhone’s camera function for business purposes while maintaining corporate secrets, in collaboration with Apple, Inc. and MobileIron, Inc. of the United States. This world-first solution is being fully utilized in the operations of Toyota Motor Kyushu and is also being considered for commercial release as a business solution for global companies.

As smartphones, tablets and other smart devices rapidly proliferate, more companies are leveraging their convenience to use them in place of computers. On the other hand, many of these companies also handle sensitive information and have adopted measures to limit the use of mobile phones and smartphones with camera functions that could easily leak information to the outside through simple actions like taking photos.
However, there were also cases where photo taking was necessary to maintain records of work and other activities in regular operations. In such cases, it was necessary to strictly define rules for managing the photos, including details about the photographer, date and time of the shot, location, and data storage methods, but in reality, the responsibility was left to the discretion of the individual taking the photos.
To solve these problems, Toyota Motor Kyushu and TRIART developed a secure camera solution using Apple’s iPhone that centrally manages everything from taking pictures to viewing stored images, and have now started utilizing it in Toyota Motor Kyushu’s automobile manufacturing operations.
In this system, the standard camera app’s ability to take photos is restricted through the iPhone’s camera control function. Furthermore, it has been made possible to take photos only with a camera application exclusive to this system. Additionally, at the time of taking a photo, the photographer can be identified by entering an employee number for authentication when the camera is activated. Also, by not leaving the data in a viewable state on the iPhone device and instead uploading it to a dedicated management server, image data can be managed, and information leakage is prevented by limiting viewers to only the photographer and administrators. Until now, companies handling confidential information often imposed restrictions on bringing smartphones with camera functions, but on the other hand, there are cases where taking photos during work is necessary, making the secure management of the photos and information about the photographers a significant issue. We have developed a groundbreaking solution that solves these issues all at once and have started utilizing it in our operations.

This system was developed for business use of iPhones at Toyota Motor Kyushu, with the cooperation of Apple Japan and Apple Inc. in the USA, and by leveraging MobileIron, Inc.’s advanced iOS device management capabilities, along with AppConnect MAM technology and Web Services API, to realize a solution tailored for iPhones. The technological development was a joint effort with TRIART, based in Iizuka, Fukuoka, as part of the “Rediscovering and Utilizing the Power of Kyushu” regional collaboration activity, which is part of Toyota Motor Kyushu’s corporate vision. This was Toyota Motor Kyushu’s first attempt at joint development with an IT venture, and they decided to proceed with the collaboration with TRIART due to their strength in security technology for smart devices.
TRIART is an IT venture originating from Kyushu Institute of Technology, specializing in the research, development, and consulting of new technologies using IT, and has developed numerous applications and solutions for mobile devices.
